We all got monkey hammered. Most all of my retirement fund is not in stocks. Wife and I can live fine on SS and a small pension. We use retirement account to pay property tax. $12000/year. Ouch.

I am used to daily $10k-$15 swings. They go UP + DOWN.
But this one was $29k. It was my largest one day loss ever....

No, just live in CA. Also all houses out here are worth over $1M, castles or not. I swapped a mortgage for the hi prop tax when I moved 5 years ago. Flip side is I have no mortgage.

In retirement, I do not have enough in volatile stock to take that kind of hit in one day. Most of my portfolio is in cash equivalents such as bonds, CDs, a collector car and even an annuity. The annuity is a fixed index annuity that earns a capped
5%/year but can never lose money. In about 6 more years, it can pay me $40,000/year for 10 years, but my grandkids are intended to be the beneficiaries.
Did you see what ADBE did today on 9/15. I was bearish going into earnings, but only expected it to be down $30 rather than $60! See what FDX did in after hours. What insane haircuts. How could anyone want to be in the market. Like surfing
    on 50 foot waves.

Bummer here too. Bet market gets bounce on 9/21 when Fed reports only .75 rate increase rather than 1.00. Going on a Mississippi River cruise next week. St Louis to Minneapolis.
