fraid so. Without membership you can (depending on State) purchase
booze and drugs (the latter at a higher price than members) but that's it. >>
** HOWVER **, if you have one of their "gift cards" (pre-paid cash cards), >> you can go into the store and purchase anything. You can use, say,
a $50 card for a $75 purchase and make up the rest in cash.
So if you've got a friend with a membership, ask them to
pick up a couple of $25 cards, use them to get your hot dog,
and I guarantee you'll find something else to use the
rest on.
Gas is cheaper there AND you get a 4% rebate. If you go before the
store opens there are generally no lines. My Costco is 10 miles away
(2/3 gallon round trip) and I go maybe once a month.
to be clear, that 4% rebate is only if you
use the Costco branded Citibank credit card,
(and maybe with the extra price "executive
membership").
But yes, if your friend bought you some pre-paid Costco
gift cards, you _can_ use them at the gas pump - which
is often the cheapest gas around, even without rebates.
SIDENOTE: you can NOT do the same at SAM's Club [a]. If
you have their gift cards but are not a member, you
will NOT be able to gas up.
This caused me some grief a year ago and yes, I wrote
their corporate hq pissed as hell.
[a] in my earlier post I wrote "BJ's". Sorry about
that, chief.
