    You could do what I'm having to do at the moment, and delete /var/db/repos/ gentoo before syncing; also setting clone-depth = 1 in /etc/portage/ repos.conf/gentoo.conf.

    It's 1.9GB here, after a long time of frequent syncing and no cleaning up.
    Do you have distfiles or packages in there?

    You can simply delete the portage directory and sync again.
