  • [gentoo-user] 5 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating ?

    Dear Gentoo folks :

    I am making great progress with the SiFive P550 RISC-V board in that
    the kernel seems to have been built. No idea where it is hiding yet and
    no idea how I will boot this thing past the OpenSBI and U-Boot. That
    will come later today. I hope.

    For right now I need to sort out the network config and that means I
    need the net-misc/netifrc package goodness. I see in the handbook that
    the option --noreplace is there also :

    chroot# /usr/bin/time -p /usr/bin/nice -n +19 emerge --ask --verbose --noreplace net-misc/netifrc

    * IMPORTANT: 4 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
    * Use eselect news read to view new items.


    * IMPORTANT: 5 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
    * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
    * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

    These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

    However there is a message which claims 5 config files need to be
    updated somewhere in /etc/portage. Which five? Also ... why?

    Managing the migration of configuration files from your previous version of a package to the next is a maintenance activity you need to undertake regularly. What you probably need to know on this subject is explained here:
