I came across this today: https://bugs.gentoo.org/924772#c27 . It shows a way to restrict updates in which binpkgs have not yet been made available.

Just a hint to anyone who sometimes has to cope with this condition, as I do

It's not as useful as I hoped. It can't accept sets or wildcards: only specific package names.
