• Please help me get out for my holiday break

    From rudu@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jul 26 01:50:01 2025
    This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
    Hi
    I'm just trying to get a break from debian-user for a month.
    So I sent a mail with due subject to request as asked here :

    List-Unsubscribe:<mailto:[email protected]?subject=unsubscribe>

    Nothing happened.
    So I went to https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/ where I put my mail
    address, the same I use right here.
    Again to no avail.
    Looking for help, I read here : https://www.debian.org/MailingLists/#subglitches
    ... that I could try to send a mail from another address with subject unsubscribe [email protected]
    ... with of course the mail address I use here again.

    I did all that at least 15 hours ago, so I guess I've been patient
    enough ;-)

    So, can anybody tell me what to do ?

    Thanks
    Rudu

    This isn't a very verbose explanation of what you did. I hope you did
    this:

    Sent an email to [email protected] with subject
    line "unsubscribe"

    If you did that, that should work.

    PROVIDED THAT HE EMAIL ADDRESS YOU SENT IT FROM IS ACTUALLY THE ONE
    SUBSCRIBED TO THE LIST.

    Nothing happened.

    If, on the other hand, the address you sent it *from* is *not*
    subscribed to the list, then silence is what would be expected. It won't
    work.

    So I went to https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/ where I put my mail address, the same I use right here.
    Again to no avail.
    Looking for help, I read here : https://www.debian.org/MailingLists/#subglitches
    ... that I could try to send a mail from another address with subject unsubscribe [email protected]
    ... with of course the mail address I use here again.

    Aain I find the above difficult to parse. What is "quux:exemple.com"? Is
    it you giving an example? It would help us if you told us *exactly* what
    you did, with no censoring.

    The email address younare using to send this post is [email protected].
    Is that what you put in the subject line? Is that the one you sent
    *from* in your first attempt?

    Perhaps [email protected] is not the address you are subscribed as?
    Emails can still find their way into your inbox even using different
    addresses. You can check by viewing the headers of an email you received
    from the list and looking for the "Envelope-To" header near the top. For example, mine says:

    Envelope-to: [email protected]

    That's the address I am subscribed as, so you can find out yours that
    way.

    Thanks,
    Andy

    OK, sorry, that one was probably aded by my mail server. The actual

    Yes the address I use is [email protected], sorry for my imprecision.

    I join my first attempt to this mail.

    It looks okay. So guesses I have left are:

    a) [email protected] is not the actual address you are subscribed as. I
    already advised to check the full headers of a piuece of list email
    that you receive to see what the list thinks you are subscribed as.
    Or;

    b) Is it possible that you are automatically junking emails from the list
    now? WHen you request unsubscription, the list software will send a
    confirmation message back to the address you are trying to
    unsubscribe. That mail contains a one time password and asks you to
    reply to it. If you don't get that email, you can't reply, and the
    unsubscription doesn't happen.

    If all of that fails, it would probably be best to contact [email protected] and explain your difficulties. That should put you
    in contact with a human volunteer who is able to manually unsubscribe
    you.

    Thanks,
    Andy

    AFAICT for debian-user, the envelope address that you used is
    in the Old-Return-Path: header. It's where your bounced mails
    will be sent. The OP's looks the same as the From: address:
    →Old-Return-Path: <[email protected]>
    →From: rudu <[email protected]>

    How it's shown is different for different lists: some will quote
    the envelope-from, and even the HELO, that's used at different
    steps along the way. I especially like:
    helo=antelope.elm.relay.mailchannels.net
    helo=bonobo.aspen.relay.mailchannels.net
    helo=camel.birch.relay.mailchannels.net
    helo=dormouse.elm.relay.mailchannels.net
    helo=iguana.tulip.relay.mailchannels.net
    helo=snail.cherry.relay.mailchannels.net
    etc., but not when the snail takes four hours to relay the
    fruits of my labour to the list.

    Cheers,
    David.

    Nope, you really do appear to be subscribed as [email protected]. I don't
    know why the unsubscription is not working for you. I think you'll have
    to ask the [email protected] address for help.

    Here's the headers where you can see your address:

    I thought of that, so further than looking in the spam box of
    Thnuderbird, I got a look in the webmail of my provider to check its
    spam box too.
    There wasn't any confirmation message of my unsubscription either.

    Thank you Andy for the contact of the listmaster, I may contact him if
    nobody sees what I'm doing wrong.
