Anecdote: I once got sent a PDF to "sign": what the sender meant was:
print out, sign, scan in.
I imported the PDF in Gimp, beamed in a signature of me I have as a
scan with transparent background and exported the thing again. "Will
look about right, but will be enormous, since it's now basically a
pixmap somehow wrapped up in a PDF.
To my surprise, the result was *significantly smaller* than the original.
Go figure.
