• Firefox and Video DRM

From George at Clug@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jan 31 08:00:01 2025
Does anyone use Firefox to watch DRM protected Video content?

Is it normal for DRM to display lots of ads whenever Firefox is
    loaded?

I did enable DRM once, a long time ago, and I started getting annoying
ads whenever Firefox was loaded. It took a while for me to determine
it was because of the DRM add-on. The DRM add-on was loaded into the
user's file space. I do not know if displaying the ads was normal DRM
add-on behavour or whether a malisious web page had replaced the
originally downloaded DRM file with a hacked version. My solution at
the time was to delete any Firefox folders in my /home/username area
(e.g. ~/.mozilla/firefox). DRM was not too important to me, so I now
    just do not enable DRM.

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enable-drm
Firefox for desktop supports the Google Widevine CDM for playing
    DRM-controlled content.

Disabling Google Widevine from the Add-ons Manager prevents it from
running on your computer and prevents future updates from downloading.

Please reply if you have had any such experiences.

    George.

As watching video involves downloading the video, why not simply use
yt-dlp to download the videos, and, watch the videos with your
    preference of video viewer?

    Good question !

I have two answers (which might not be good answers, if so someone may be able to correct me)

    1) For some time now yt-dlp has been unable to download videos which I wanted to download.

    2) I only know how to download Youtube videos with yt-dlp, and the videos that I wanted to watch were not from Youtube.

Question: can yt-dlp download DRM protected videos?

    George.

If you're on Debian Stable, please be aware that the version of yt-dlp (2023.03.04-1) is really ancient and not feasible with YouTube as of today.
You need to install more recent version from bookworm-backports and keep it up-to-date.

    2) I only know how to download Youtube videos with yt-dlp, and the videos that I wanted to watch were not from Youtube.

yt-dlp supports plenty of video services:

I have two answers (which might not be good answers, if so someone may be able to correct me)

    1) For some time now yt-dlp has been unable to download videos which I wanted to download.

If you're on Debian Stable, please be aware that the version of yt-dlp (2023.03.04-1) is really ancient and not feasible with YouTube as of today. You need to install more recent version from bookworm-backports and keep it up-to-date.

    Thank you for that info.

    # apt -t bookworm-backports install yt-dlp youtubedl-gui

And now I can successfully download videos from YouTube, either from command line or GUI.

    2) I only know how to download Youtube videos with yt-dlp, and the videos that I wanted to watch were not from Youtube.

At the time the DRM video was on a news site, from memory.

If I come across a DRM video again, I can check. However checking a few news site today, I do not know how to find the video's URL for me to use in downloading.

It is good to be able download Youtube videos. Thanks.

    George.

In answer to 2 and the unnumbered question, it seems to work (for the
    most part) for me.

I have multiple add-ons/plugins installed in Firefox, including for downloading videos, so, I generally try another one, is I have problems.

The only videos that I watch within the web browser, are some youtube videos, for the subtitles, as I have a hearing disability, that stops me from being able to easily hear most people speaking.

If you want to retain a copy of a video for later reference, I recommend OBS Studio to capture video and audio of what is being played. That way you could capture the subtitles as well.

Plugins/add-ons exist, for blocking advertising, and for other system protection, including (but not limited to) Bluhell Firewall, uBlock
Origins, etc, with some such blockers, specific to youtube. I have
    multiple of them installed.

I do not have DRM enabled, and, if I see a message displayed saying something like "You need to have DRM enabled in order to view this
video", I simply work around it, and, use a downloader to overcome it.

    George.

In answer to 2 and the unnumbered question, it seems to work (for the
    most part) for me.

I have multiple add-ons/plugins installed in Firefox, including for
downloading videos, so, I generally try another one, is I have problems.

The only videos that I watch within the web browser, are some youtube
videos, for the subtitles, as I have a hearing disability, that stops me
from being able to easily hear most people speaking.

Plugins/add-ons exist, for blocking advertising, and for other system protection, including (but not limited to) Bluhell Firewall, uBlock
Origins, etc, with some such blockers, specific to youtube. I have
    multiple of them installed.

I do not have DRM enabled, and, if I see a message displayed saying
something like "You need to have DRM enabled in order to view this
video", I simply work around it, and, use a downloader to overcome it.

I run firefox with a number of add-ons, including adblock plus, ublock origin, privacy badgerm and cookie autodelete. Not the most current version, but that will change once I complete the transition to the new machine.

If I want to see something on the web, I'll look for it, and bring it up myself. That means that to me the web is a "pull" medium. Unfortunately there seems to be an awful lot of folks out there that consider the web to be a "push" medium, like
traditional mass media advertising. But it just doesn't work that way. And those who choose to get really obnoxious about this stuff are those that I will eventually decide not to do any business with, given any kind of a choice. There was some guy,
I can't remember his name, quoted in a magazine article some years back who grudgingly admitted that it was okay to record copyrighted material on your vcr for the purposes of time shifting it, but he said you really weren't allowed to fast forward
    past the commercials! Right...

As far as DRM is concerned, I've never really had any desire to view such stuff. Very occasionally I'll get some sort of a popup telling me that I must enable DRM to view some of the content on the page that I've just loaded, or am in the process of
loading. I will usually just close that popup without doing any enabling of the sort, and for the most part I don't have any problem viewing whatever media is on that page. My attitude toward this is that if they're gonna design their web page to make
it more difficult to view things, that's their loss, and I will find my information elsewhere. Eventually maybe people will figure this out, and those who design web pages will get a clue, but that might take a long time. In the meantime there sure
seems to be a lot of badly designed web stuff out there, and thankfully I can manage to avoid it for the most part.

My most recent add-on is noscript. Some web pages simply won't work until you tell the noscript add-on that they're "trusted" (or perhaps "temp trusted"), at which point they work, sometimes it takes a bit more than that. In a few cases I get a
banner across the bottom of the screen telling me that to use the site javascript must be enabled. But the page displays just fine, which has me wondering just what it is that they're trying to do with that javascript that I'm not running. These
banners often being an annoying bright red, I'll typically remove them with the nuke anything add-on and that takes care of that. :-)

Packages from backports are pinned with low priority (100) and never
installed by default. So in order to install a backported package, you
    need to do it like:

    apt install yt-dlp/bookworm-backports

    Roger,

I was not able to find a way to select and install backports from Synaptic. If someone can explain how, that would be helpful.

I noticed that Synaptic was showing the installed version (whether the package was installed from stable or from backports.

    I wanted to install both yt-dlp youtubedl-gui

As I already had these two packages installed from stable, I decided to uninstall the stable packages before installing the backports versions.
    # apt remove yt-dlp youtubedl-gui

With backports repositories included in the /etc/apt/sources.list, I logged into a terminal as root, then I used the below method (which is a different syntax than that posted by others, but I believe it does the same thing):
    # apt -t bookworm-backports install yt-dlp youtubedl-gui

You do not need to install youtubedl-gui but I found it to be a simple and effective GUI frontend to yt-dlp.

You can find more details at:
    https://wiki.debian.org/Backports

    Example of Backports in /etc/apt/sources.list
    # bookworm-backports, previously on backports.debian.org
    deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-backports main contrib non-free non-free-firmware

    just landed in bookworm-backports today.

For this particular package, I don't follow any of the rules.
I normally go to Debian's Packages webpage and download (with
wget) the latest I can find, typically trixie's at this time.
Today that page appears to be down, so I just headed to the
pool and fished the link from:
    http://deb.debian.org/debian/pool/main/y/yt-dlp/

    I installed it with:
    # apt -s install /home/debian/trixie/yt-dlp_2025.01.26-1_all.deb
to check the dependencies (this is on bullseye), then deleted the -s.

As it's the only "pseudo-backport" I use, it saves a lot of hassle
with the sources list etc, installing it in this way.

    Cheers,
    David.
