• Mailing list conduct and long threads [WAS new computer arriving soon e

    From Andrew M.A. Cater@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jan 10 16:20:01 2025
This is is a formal request to end participation in the long threads
    currently running on this list.

Since the beginning of January 2025, the majority of list traffic has
been taken up by long threads. At least one of these has carried on since
    last month.

Please refrain from off-topic discussion and arguments. The primary purpose
of the debian-user list is to provide user support, not to host long rambling arguments.

Recently, the tone of discussion has deteriorated: individual posts are
showing annoyance. It is natural to be annoyed by posts from time to time but responses showing further aggression or inconsiderate language do not fix the problem. They make it worse.

    Please stop.

The FAQ published each month asks contributors to the list to be polite and considerate. The list is much more widely read than the number of regular contributors may suggest. Long off-topic threads make it much harder for casual readers to understand what is actually going on and gain benefit from discussions.

Bringing personal frustration into responses doesn't help anybody with understanding and doesn't help the reputation of the posters or respondents.
It also damages the future usefulness of the list as people feel discouraged from reading. asking questions or posting problems

The monthly FAQ posts answers to some questions but also lays out expectations for this list and all messaging using Debian's resources. It is not meant to penalise individuals but is there to help everyone get the best from the list.

With thanks for your understanding and cooperation in this,

    Andrew Cater
