    We need to know what level you wish to go down to, and it would help to
    know why you want to. Rewriting the entire graphics system is probably
    a lifetime job for one person.

    Or you may just mean you want to customise the desktop you have been
    given, which is easy, as it will have been made to be customised. If
    you are accustomed to Windows, which gives you a couple of options for
    the taskbar and free placing of icons, you will be spoilt for choice.
    You have half a dozen popular desktop environments and a few lesser
    known ones. You don't need a desktop environment at all, a minimalist
    screen can be drawn just with a window manager, and you use menus to
    get things running.

    You also mention 'server', and it's normal in Linux for servers not to
    use graphics at all, just a text console, as they are normally operated remotely. This isn't Windows, where the servers have desktops and still
    need a lot of text console work to actually operate.

    So tell us what you have at the moment, what is wrong with it, and what
    you want to achieve.

    In Debian, there are a few different GUI layers: Bottom up(simplified):

    * Xorg/Wayland
    * Desktop environment
    * Window manager
    * Gtk/qt
    * Applications

    What layer would you like to make your own?
