brscan4 (as with all of Brother's software) is only available as a Brother-supplied *deb package. You're not going to find it in public
    repos.

Head on over to https://support.brother.com and grab it.

That's the old way, yeah. It should still work.

    The newer way is:

    (sudo) apt-get update
    (sudo) apt-get install ./brscan4-0.4.11-1.amd64.deb

The ./ (or ../ or an absolute path beginning with a slash) is required
so apt-get knows this is a local filename and not a package name or
regular expression matching multiple package names.

This will install the package along with whatever dependencies it requires, without you needing to put your packaging system into a broken state and
then ask apt-get to try to fix it.

Of course, such manual install of `.deb` files means that you won't automatically get future updates, e.g. to fix security bugs.
To add insult to injury, such `.deb` files often contain proprietary code,
    of course.

Last time I installed any of Brother's packages (last year, given file timestamps ;) ), the download page came with a full set of instructions.
As I recall, they should boil down to essentially something like this:

    1. (sudo) dpkg -i brscan4-0.4.11-1.amd64.deb
    2. (sudo) apt-get update && apt-get -f install

That's the old way, yeah. It should still work.

    The newer way is:

    (sudo) apt-get update
    (sudo) apt-get install ./brscan4-0.4.11-1.amd64.deb

Certainly a cleaner way, if it has missing dependencies. I'm gonna have
to remember that one when I get a new HDD for the laptop ...

    (I won't :) )

Of course, such manual install of `.deb` files means that you won't automatically get future updates, e.g. to fix security bugs.
To add insult to injury, such `.deb` files often contain proprietary code,

Given our friends at Brother don't have any repositories at all, this is somewhat a moot point.

Some weird friends you have, who don't let you see the code they force
you to run to use the tools you buy from them.

Also "just works" doesn't mean "isn't full of security holes"

    I scan on a clapped-out HP printer with a legal-sized platen.
As I have to place the originals myself, it's convenient to
scan to a USB stick rather than a computer. When I turn it
on, after powercuts, I have to open and close the ink drawer
a couple of times, as they contain little or no ink, to stop
it moaning. All the ink stuff dried up years ago.

I'm waiting for the day HP combos refuse scanning whenever
they think their ink is done. Remember my words ;-)

For printing, I use a driverless B&W Brother laser printer.
Cheaper, no fuss, and no bother after periods without use.
Yes, leave colour printing to commercial outfits.

Brother was our last. It did 15 years, no fuss, until some plastic
    parts inside became brittle.

Where others have driverless printers, I've printerless drivers :)

A scan of the OS found 6 brscan4 files that were not removed by sudo apt-get purge brscan4.
Is it safe for me to deleted those files, or will I corrupt the OS?

Difficult to know. Probably yes. Move them to some safe
    place before removing them altogether.

How do you know they are "brscan4 files"? How do you know
    there aren't more of them?
