Hi, I'm a longtime linux user but I'm getting oriented to the debian
community and I was wondering what projects needed new eyes?

Pretty much every aspect of Debian (and FOSS) needs contributors.

We document most of the different ways to help Debian here:

    https://www.debian.org/intro/help

We document the different QA activities Debian has/needs here:

    https://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org

Probably the most impactful QA service is the package tracker,
since package maintainers often consult it before uploading.

    https://tracker.debian.org/ https://qa.pages.debian.net/distro-tracker/contributing.html

If you have any particular interests or skills you want to learn
about or use then we can probably give more specific advice.

Thank you! I'll have a look at the distro tracker. Also, salsa is giving
me an error about pending admin approval to create a salsa account, do you know how
I'd go about getting that approval?

Thank you! I've added myself to a few mailing lists but are there any in particular you recommend? Just in case I missed any.

And that does sound really interesting! Are autoupkgtests pretty
ergonomic to write or do they take a bit of wrangling?

Don't overwhelm yourself, I'm sure "a few" is plenty for now. Make sure you've subscribed to [email protected] though, it is very helpful for beginner questions and answers. I've also seen you around on IRC, which is a very good idea; in my
experience IRC, especially on the #debian-mentors channel, is a very relaxed forum for discussion and is a good place to ask quick questions.

And that does sound really interesting! Are autoupkgtests pretty ergonomic to write or do they take a bit of wrangling?

It kind of depends. An autopkgtest is typically in the form of a shell script, but it can be written in any language you are comfortable with. Typically the tests (like the kind that I really love) that get multiple packages talking to each other will
take a little bit of work, but will be all the more rewarding.

Let's move this conversation to [email protected] or onto the #debian-mentors IRC (my nickname is 'pert', we've already chatted a little bit there), which would make a more appropriate venue, and work on identifying packages you are
interested in. Hope to see you there.

P.S. This is totally unrelated, but I happen to be a happy Posteo customer too: you should look into having Posteo publish your OpenPGP key for you (you don't have to enable inbound encryption), which will make it easier for people to find and
authenticate it. You will have to tweak your key though, I'll send you directions privately on how to do that momentarily.
