puzzling build failures on zani

I'm having trouble understanding this build failure [1], which seems to
happen only on zani.

pabs mentioned that this is recently upgraded hardware, I'm not sure if
that could be related.

I have a different bug (emacs related) on zelenka [2] that prevents me from duplicating the problem there.

Any ideas for
