• n8jja/Pat-Vara for VARA software modems

From tony mancill@21:1/5 to All on Fri Sep 2 06:40:01 2022
    Hi Debian Hams,

I am packaging version 0.13.0 [1] of the pat Winlink client, which among
other improvements now has support for VARAHF and VARAFM [2]. We can
either create a package for n8jja/Pat-Vara or patch support for it out
    of the pat build.

If there are users of VARA, please speak up and I will go that route.
(But I wanted to coordinate on-list before going to the effort to have a package go through NEW for a feature that maybe no one will use.)

    Cheers,
    tony KG7IEL

Or maybe drop the 5 .go files into a vendor directory as a patch or orig-vara.tar.gz? Seems unlikely this would be useful as a standalone
go library package to anyone else outside of pat.

    Hi Tony,
    I don't know if I understand correctly.
For emergency communication I use VARAHF and Winlink on a MS-Win10 PC.
That is the only 'real' use on that computer and I would like to have an opportunity to use the whole shebang on my Linux machine. No matter if
partly with Wine or directly on hardware.
I tried Win10 on a virtual machine, but at least within the VM the MS-OS
is unable to distinguish between analog and digital audio ports. Digital
ports work OK but it also streams digital audio over the analog ports no
matter how I tweaked the setup. So I had to setup another computer with
plain Win10 just for the purpose of Winlink and VARAHF. :-/

I eagerly observe progress with Winlink and/or VARA on Linux but have to
dig more into the matter to be of help testing.

Ooh, thank you for the good idea! That's definitely the best path.

pat 0.13.0 is now available in experimental. It passes basic smoke
tests, but since I am not a very sophisticated Winlink user, I wanted to
give users a chance to test before pushing the new version into
    unstable.

That's awesome news. As soon as it hits unstable / backports I'll check it
