• Bug#1109472: xterm: display issue: dots in the bottom line

From Vincent Lefevre@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jul 18 16:40:01 2025
    XPost: linux.debian.maint.x

    Package: xterm
    Version: 401-1
    Severity: minor

I've noticed a small display issue with xterm 401: dots in
the bottom line. See attached screenshot. There are 1 dot
below the q and other 2 dots on the right.

I have no idea how these dots appeared.

Moving to another desktop (making the xterm window disappear)
and back (so that the xterm window had to be redisplayed) made
    these dots disappeared.

I could eventually reproduce the issue. This is due to the characters
    like

    U+2502 BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT VERTICAL
U+251C BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT VERTICAL AND RIGHT

when put in the bottom text line.

This already occurs with an xterm on a bookworm machine
    (current stable).

    Followup-For: Bug #1109472

I would just like to confirm this glitch but can't really provide more
info. It does indeed seem to be font related, I'm nearly always using
Noto Mono with xterm, size is likely irrelevant. It almost certainly
predates Bookworm by a long shot, in fact I cannot remember when it
started, possibly as long as I'm using this configuration. The
characters so far identified, if they are, cannot be the only culprits,
at least I'm unaware of ever using them. My xterms are usually full
screen, it's possible the issue doesn't occur in smaller windows but
    that's not a given.

It's harmless, very infrequent, and probabaly only affects the specific terminal/font combination, we're just documenting it.

    Regards,
    Oliver

fwiw, the feature dates from #331 (perhaps I overlooked clipping).
