• Bug#1108910: spectacle: no longer starts the GUI (regression)

From Thorsten Glaser@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jul 7 17:10:01 2025
    Package: kde-spectacle
    Version: 4:6.3.5-2
    Severity: important
    X-Debbugs-Cc: [email protected]

    If I just start spectacle, it no longer shows the GUI;
rather, it just blinks a small (maybe 300x300?) window
into existence and quickly away and aborts.

    tg@tgb1:~ $ spectacle
Couldn't start kglobalaccel from org.kde.kglobalaccel.service: QDBusError("org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown", "The name org.kde.kglobalaccel was not provided by any .service files")
qrc:/qt/qml/org/kde/spectacle/private/Gui/ImageView.qml: module "windows" is not installed
QThreadStorage: Thread 0x5652f7e16d10 exited after QThreadStorage 9 destroyed

    This worked in version 20.12.3-1.

Note that taking a screenshot in background mode still works.

    Dear Thorsten,

I don’t want to make it a pattern but I cannot reproduce your issue. :)

It’s of course not reproducible on my Plasma session or I would have noticed, but I did also try from an clean xfce install of trixie, spectacle installed with --no-install-recommends, both with the graphical session started from lightdm and from a VT
with startx and it worked fine in all cases. The window just opened normally.

If it happens to be due to some configuration of yours you may want to try moving away the following files / folders and trying again :
    ./.config/kde.org/spectacle.conf
    ./.config/spectaclerc
    ./.local/state/spectaclestaterc
    ./.cache/spectacle

    Otherwise I’m out of ideas…

    Happy hacking,

    … of course ;-)

None of these existed, as it was a fresh install.

The install uses console login plus “exec startx” with
icewm-session, but things like Okular start properly
when ran (and I even got hiDPI scaling right for them).

    Otherwise I’m out of ideas…

I’ll try to see if strace, valgrind or gdb show anything,
    I suppose.

    Thanks anyway for trying,
