I've upgraded from woody to sarge and got a post-inst error because the directory /var/log/news could not be created. The system was configured to
log news.* to the file /var/log/news instead of /var/log/news/news.*. This prevented to creation of the directory.

I suggest that post-inst should check the configfile /etc/syslog.conf for required directories, so if there is not need for /var/log/news/... (as in
my case) why create it?
