Hi,
could you please try to reproduce this. I suspect it's the interaction
between hddtemp and smartmontools. Just using
apt-get --reinstall install hddtemp smartmontools
should reproduce it for you, since nothing changed in smartmontools
startup behaviour since then. If this is the case please attache strace
to smartd (using -p) and send me the output.
