• Bug#266266: gaim: smiley problem

From Cristiano De Michele@1:229/2 to All on Tue Aug 17 12:00:16 2004
    From: [email protected]

    Package: gaim
    Version: 1:0.81-3
    Severity: minor

if I put in a message :-) smiley won't appear in the message while
if I choose it from smileys button on chat window it appears correctly.
Note that :-P works both ways.
It seems that only some smileys don't work.

Which protocols do you use or have you noticed this on? I've noticed
this problem on the Yahoo protocol (bug #264861) but it appears to work
    fine on MSN and AIM.

Also, if there are characters (even just a single space) after the emoticon/smiley then it will display properly. Do you find the same?

yes problem is with yahoo protocol
and if I add chars afetr emoticon/smiley it works fine
    problem is exactly the same.

In addition I noticed that jabber account after a while always switch automatically to "Not Authorized" status but with 0.80 it worked without problems...

You might want to post that Jabber problem as a separate bug so they can
    be tracked independently.

I've checked out the emoticon "theme" file and tried modifying it with
various combinations, but I can't get it to work. So I assume it's a
problem with the actual parsing code, although it's still weird that it
    only occurs on Yahoo.

I'm not a C coder however and so it's no use me trying any debugging -
does anybody know if this is occurring in the upstream release also or
    just ours?

That helped me - I've just gone through and managed to work out how to reproduce the problem.

    1. Clear or move your .gaim directory (I don't have a .gaimrc, from an
older version perhaps?) to start afresh.

    2. Load up Gaim, add your Yahoo account to it and sign in.

    3. Open preferences, choose Smiley Themes and click on the Default set
so we actually have them enabled

    4. Open an IM to yourself or a friend, and smileys should work as normal

    5. Go back to Prefs, in the Message Text part, enable the option "Send
    default formatting with outgoing messages"

    6. Try the IM again (wait a few seconds for it to take effect), and
you'll find that :) or :( on the end of a line with no characters after
    it fails to work...

Can you confirm that sequence Cristiano?
