    Package: menu
    Version: 2.1.5-10.1

This could be related to my having removed quite a few packages
    recently (KDE, Gnome).

The problem stem from the fact you have upgraded fluxbox without
upgrading menu. New fluxbox use outputencoding and need at least
menu 2.1.9-1. You can fix it by upgrading menu.

Fluxbox maintainer, fluxbox should Conflict with menu (<< 2.1.9-1)
since it use outputencoding, as it is documented to avoid this
    problem (with partial upgrade).

    Cheers,
