• Bug#266209: sudo: Sudo hangs for a while when network is down.

From Greg Kochanski@1:229/2 to All on Tue Aug 17 03:00:12 2004
    From: [email protected]

    Package: sudo
    Version: 1.6.7p5-2
    Severity: minor

Sudo has an unexpected dependence on the network.
I ran sudo when my network connection was down
(in fact, I ran it to find out what was wrong...)
and it delays for a minute or so, until
    gethostbyname() times out.

Ideally, there would be a flag to avoid this,
or better yet, make it independent of the network.

    Here's the error message:

    gpk:site-packages$ sudo vi /var/log/syslog
sudo: unable to lookup gpk via gethostbyname()
    Password:
    gpk:site-packages$
    ~

    Here's the relevant /var/log/syslog:

    Aug 17 01:20:01 gpk /USR/SBIN/CRON[23248]: (root) CMD (/bin/sync)
Aug 17 01:20:33 gpk kernel: e100: eth0 NIC Link is Down
Aug 17 01:20:37 gpk kernel: e100: eth0 NIC Link is Up 10 Mbps Half
    duplex
    Aug 17 01:25:01 gpk /USR/SBIN/CRON[23257]: (root) CMD (/bin/sync)

Here's /etc/sudoers, with comments and blank lines removed.
    root ALL=(ALL) ALL
    gpk ALL=(ALL) ALL
