I was also seeing the same errors, so I tried your workaround
with evolution 1.4.6-3 but that doesn't work.
The only thing I have found that works is setting the
'Use secure connection (SSL)' box to 'Always'.
That seems to force Evolution to use IMAPS rather than negotiating
TLS on the IMAP port which is just broken apparently. Obviously I
had to setup my IMAP server to also expect IMAPS rather than just
TLS over IMAP.
