• Bug#266017: hal: Please add debconf question whether fstab should be au

    Severity: wishlist

    Hello,

gnome-volume-manager is in testing now and HAL-0.2.96/97 will have a
more robust C program to update fstab. As g-v-m is much less useful
without automatic fstab-updating, it would be nice if users/admin would
be given the choice to use it. I guess you will not want to enable this
feature by default, but I think this would be a worthwhile reason to
have a debconf question for it.

It is a sad but true fact that many users who run GNOME desktops on
their Debian Sarge box will likely not look in
/usr/share/doc/hal/README.Debian to figure out how to make their
    hardware just work.

If you agree that having a debconf question is acceptable, I could send
    a patch.

    cheers,

    Michael

Last time this was discussed Martin suggested that the fstab updating should be enabled by default, when it's mature/robust enough. I personally haven't
tried fstab-sync yet, but from what i hear it's getting there.

It would have been even sadder if they didn't even have gvm and hal in sarge :) I personally don't want people to enable the current fstab updating without thinking about it, so it's imho a good thing that they have to look in the README.

Now ofcourse for sarge+1 the project utopia stuff will all be a lot more mature and better intergrated with gnome. What we currently have is just a taste of the good things to come :) Hopefully sarge+1 won't take two years...
