• Bug#266010: qmail has trouble upgrading a previously installed version

From Allen Chan@1:229/2 to All on Mon Aug 16 12:00:20 2004
    From: [email protected]

    Package: qmail-src
    Version: 1.03-32

After compiling the package using the build-qmail command, installing
the resulting qmail_1.03-32_i386.deb over version 1.03-31 using dpkg
    hangs:

    # dpkg -i qmail_1.03-32_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 115677 files and directories currently
    installed.)
Preparing to replace qmail 1.03-31 (using qmail_1.03-32_i386.deb) ...
    Stopping mail-transfer agent: qmail.
    Unpacking replacement qmail ...
    Setting up qmail (1.03-32) ...
    [hangs here]

If I press ^C to interrupt the system, I get:

    Setting up qmail (1.03-32) ...
    [hang]
    ^C
    dpkg: error processing qmail (--install):
subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Interrupt)
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    qmail
    #

If I first remove qmail with dpkg --purge qmail, then the deb installs
    with no problems.

If I repeat this a few times, the qmail install will sometimes
terminate with an error at preinst so that it never gets to hang at
    postinst:

    # dpkg -i qmail_1.03-32_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 115666 files and directories currently
    installed.)
Preparing to replace qmail 1.03-31 (using qmail_1.03-32_i386.deb) ...
    Stopping mail-transfer agent: qmail.
    dpkg: error processing qmail_1.03-32_i386.deb (--install):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 128
    Starting mail-transfer agent: qmail.
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    qmail_1.03-32_i386.deb
    #
