Let me know if something worked!
Sorry, my mistake: /etc/mozilla-thunderbird/global-config.js contained:
// use this if you have no access to gnome configuration
// as described on
http://www.jwsdot.com/debian/faq.html#q9
// pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http","mozilla-firebird");
// pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https","mozilla-firebird");
In trying to put in place your 3rd solution, I just uncommented these
two lines, which was obviously wrong, since it's now a fox (genus
Vulpes, family Canidae, class Mammalia) and no longer a bird (class Aves).
Changing that resolved my issue.
This file is part of the mozilla-thunderbird package. I'd suggest to
correct it.
There must be something funny on my Gnome configuration, since
configuring at that level didn't help for my current user, but helped on
a new user (operating-system level user, not just a new profile). Though
I don't care right now.
