    From Eric Valette@1:229/2 to All on Sun Aug 15 10:10:08 2004

    I switched back /etc/kde3/kdm/Xsession to 3.2.3 file. It fixes the
    problem of default session reading .xinit BUT NOT the password entering problem. Are there any log for kdm?

    /var/log/kdm.log

    but note that kdm can now act as tty's login and output nothing while
    password is typed. may it be your problem?

    # The password input fields cloak the typed in text. Specify, how to do it:
    # "OneStar" - <literal>*</literal> is shown for every typed letter
    # "ThreeStars" - <literal>***</literal> is shown for every typed letter
    # "NoEcho" - nothing is shown at all, the cursor doesn't move
    # Default is OneStar
    #EchoMode=NoEcho

    what does "grep EchoMode /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc" say?

    1 valette@tri-yann->grep EchoMode /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc
    EchoMode=OneStar

    Nothing so basic is supposed to have happened since my config was

    all files under /etc/kde3/kdm being equal in both machines?

    does it always work in the first machine? does it always fail in the
    second one? by "fail", are we talking about "keyboard not working at
    all"?

    can you think of any differences between those two machines?

    thanks,

    OK. I wipped out my kdmrc for sure on the second machine, reconfigured
    and now it works also. So my guess is :
    - The incompatibilities between 2.1 and 2.2 version of the file makes it *sometimes* (for me each time at startup) to read password. I say
    sometimes because if I log to console and do /etc/init.d/kdm restart
    with the same configuration files it works. Curious isn't it?

    Now I have no more problems. Here is what I did :
    - Replaced Xsession to use X11 ones's,
    - replaced my original kdmrc file by the kdmrc.dpkg-dist one and reconfigured...

    have you that old kdmrc file lying around? I'd like to take a look and
    see if I can find out anything.

    thanks,
