    Can you reproduce this bug when building in a up-to-date sid, or
    preferably, up-to-date sid pbuilder chroot?

    I cannot reproduce this with an up-to-date sid pbuilder but I can
    still make it happen on sarge. I edited the options for debiandoc2ps
    in Makefile.in and got some more useful output, the relevant bit is:

    ####
    debiandoc2ps -v -1 -O spec.sgml >spec.ps.new && mv spec.ps.new spec.ps nsgmls:/etc/sgml/docbook-ebnf.cat:8:8:E: cannot open "/usr/share/sgml/docbook/custom/ebnf/catalog" (No such file or directory)
    debiandoc2latexps: ERROR: spec.tex could not be generated properly debiandoc2ps: ERROR: output could not be generated properly
    make[1]: *** [spec.ps] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/userv-1.0.3'
    make: *** [build] Error 2
    debuild: fatal error at line 763:
    dpkg-buildpackage failed!
    ####

    The file /etc/sgml/docbook-ebnf.cat is managed by update-catalog, on
    both sid and sarge it contains:

    --
    ## ======================================================================
    ## /etc/sgml/docbook-ebnf.cat : SGML Open Style centralized catalog
    ## ======================================================================
    ## Please use update-catalog(8) to modify this file.
    ## ======================================================================
    --
    CATALOG /usr/share/sgml/docbook/custom/ebnf/catalog

    That catalog file only exists on sid, not sarge, so this appears to be
    a real bug but I cannot tell what is causing it. Nothing owns the file /etc/sgml/docbook-ebnf.cat or the file /usr/share/sgml/docbook/custom/ebnf/catalog (I presume it gets
    generated) so I cannot tell exactly what is causing the problem.

    In an up-to-date sarge pbuilder chroot?

    I have now tracked down this problem to the docbook-ebnf package:

    http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=255770

    This has been resolved in the version in sid:

    ####
    docbook-ebnf (1.0+really1.2b1-4) unstable; urgency=low

    * Workaround the lack of good solution to migrate a directory to a
    compat symlink, by removing the /usr/share/sgml/docbook/custom/ebnf
    directory in preinst (Closes: #255770).

    -- Yann Dirson <[email protected]> Sat, 7 Aug 2004 00:27:18 +0200
    ####

    It will go into sarge in 4 days time (currently on 6 of 10 by the
    looks of things).
