Evolution doesn't do it well,
either: it uses the length of the longest unbreakable word as the
minimum line length. If the mail contains a long URL, and blog entries
are wont to do that, Evolution makes me scroll sideways, which is quite irritating.

I don't think using "format=flowed" would solve that. Ideally, of
course, one would solve this by fixing all existing mailers, but that's
more than I want to do.
Would making word wrapping be optional be acceptable? That would be
simple for me to add. (I really, really want word wrapping, and would
prefer not to have to maintain a private version...)
I suspct it would help. I'd rather get this in upstream.
