Any chance of getting a newer version into the release?

I don't know -- I got stuck on something last time I was messing with
it, and so I'll have to go back and figure out where I was. I don't
remember for sure, but I think one of the issues may have been that
given the current setup, we'd have to ship one huge .c file, one per
arch, and I was trying to figure out a way around that since that
would be *really* ugly. I think I did get a reply I needed, but
didn't have a chance to pursue it. It looked like most of the .c
files didn't differ in any meaningful way.

There was also the 64-bit (alpha?) linker issue, but presuming I can't
get a suitable patch, we might be able to just drop the affected architecture(s) for now. The biggest slowdown is that testing any
changes takes a very big machine and a lot of time to bootstrap.

The GCC tool chain has been pretty substantially updated, so it is
possible that the linker issue on the Alpha has gone away.

Maybe instead of distributing a separate enormous C file for each
arch, distribute it for one arch and also distribute a bunch of patch
files "diff --ignore-space-change" for every other arch. Or something
    like that?

Right, if I recall right, what I was asking upstream was more or less
just "if it looks like there's no (relevant) diff between the files, is
there any reason I can't just use one arch file for all the "same"
arches?", though it was a little more than that because there were
issues regarding stability. I'll have to check, but I think the
answer was that it should be fine.

OK, I figured out where I was, and I was closer than I thought. I may
be able to upload new packages in the next day or so.
