• Bug#263881: missing dependency on logrotate component?

    tomcat 4 depends on

    apache-common (<< 1.3.29.0.2-1) | apache-utils (>= 1.3.29.0.2-1) | apache2-common

    which should either provide logrotate2 or logrotate. Which of these
    packages in which version is installed on your system?

    (I think, but I am not sure) I had apache-utils because at the time, I
    had no apache2 packages on my machine.

    but the requested logrotate file was not found.

    I did a apt-file and installed apache2-common

    I have just checked this: apache-utils actually contains
    /usr/sbin/rotatelogs (not logrotate, as written in my first mail) and I
    have never heard of this problem before. Please tell me the exact
    versions otherwise I can't fix the problem, if there's any.

    It was perhaps a temporary problem. I don't know. Something that was
    perhaps caused by a mismatch of packages version but that aptitude/apt
    let me install?

    I have no idea why it happened, and have no data to tell you more about
    it.

    You can close it.

    Package: tomcat4
    Severity: important

    I had a failed tomcat4 upgrade on a machine (which has been changed a
    lot since the problem, so I am not using reportbug).

    When I found out that tomcat was just 4.0.4 in testing, I added unstable sources and took tomcat4 from there (4.1.30).

    It pulled tomcat4, but it failed startin: it had an error about
    logrotate2 missing.

    Looking at the init script it looks like it searches for logrotate then logrotate2. None were on my system.

    I solved the problem by downloading apache2 (yea ugly) and making it not
    start as a daemon (yea really ugly).

    So there's probably a missing dependency in tomcat4 unstable package.
