• Bug#265155: xlassie: improper email indicator for mails > 100

From Nadim Shaikli@1:229/2 to All on Thu Aug 12 01:30:11 2004
    From: [email protected]

    Package: xlassie
    Version: 1.8-6
    Severity: important

Both 1.8-6 or 1.8-7 have the same problem namely when one's email count
is less that 100 there are no problems, when the mail count goes past 100
odd results (and they differ based on if '-shaped' is used or not) are
noted. For instance with a mail count of 118 with a '-shaped' option I see '11' where the first 1 is half cut-off. When the '-shaped' is NOT used, I
see '118' where both the first 1 and the 8 are half cut-off. Needless to
say the errors are in xlassie.c when it calls the 'XDrawString' due to the erroneous calculations being done using 'XTextWidth'.

I highly suggest a kludged number be passed to xlassie to test out this
issue. In reality xlassie should continue to grow (ideally in both directions which is what it seems to be doing now - I've come to this conclusion since both the 1 and 8 are cut-off, so its a matter of growing the container/window around its display that needs to to be corrected). In other words, even if there are 10000 emails, xlassie ought to display the proper number (10000)
    on screen.

    Thanks

I'm reducing the severity to "normal" because if you have 10000
messages pending a truncated count on the screen is the least of your
worries! Seriously, this is a "normal" bug by the standard criteria,
albeit perhaps of great emotional importance to some.

This issue is a bit subtle because most users (meaning, I) use xlassie
as a docked icon which can't really plump itself out without giving
the window system some indigestion. Maybe we should go for a log
scale, or for "99+". Or for a smaller font when more digits been to
    be displayed.

How about just specifying a smaller font using the -fn option, will
that work for you? If so, I'll try to document the option a bit, or
maybe add a font-size option distinct from the full font itself.

    xlassie -hilight red -fn '-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--56-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1'
    xlassie -hilight red -fn '-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1'
