• Bug#259297: Same error w/ Grub using RC1

The subject says it all. I am getting the same error on this machine after using RC1. Grub will not install on my SCSI RAID Array with a Adaptec 2120s Raid Controller??!??!??! What gives?

The same error every time, "The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly."

Lilo installs just fine and the system boots up with no problems after LILO
is installed. I am greeted with the "Welcome to your new Debian system!" message at first boot. I go through the time zone setup, root password and
new user setup... everything still working fine.

I install software via FTP, still working. Then I skip exim
    configuration... for now.

I log into the system as root, my intent is to install Grub manually... I follow the following instructions:
    /sbin/grub-install /dev/sda1
    /sbin/update-grub
    /sbin/grub-install /dev/sda

I then reboot and the system boots just fine, menu and all... with grub.

So why is the installer STILL not able to do this for me without the error
that it fails and the log output being, "The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly."?

    Michael

    Hello,

I also have a similar error with rc1 and a Compaq CCISS controller,
    although it's a little bit worse. :)

On the CCISS card, grub will not generate a valid device map - it just
spits out a blank one. If I go in and generate one manually (with the
contents "(hd0) /dev/ida/c0d0", and then attempt to re-install grub, I get
the same error you mentioned. After booting the system, grub will install
and work just fine, as long as I have the device.map entry.
