Hi,
Further to my previous message, the reason for the problem may have
been that I interrupted the tar process after the trace indicated that
tar had written the contents of the directories I had specified for
extraction as command line arguments.
This may be fatal to successfully restoring symlinks as tar seems to
defer creation of some symlinks, creating zero length ordinary files
when first extracting them from the archive and then replacing the
files by symlinks later on.
It is tempting interrupt tar if it has already apparently written the
files one requires to extract and appears to be pointlessly reading
through the remainder of the archive.
Regards,
David.
