• Bug#267167: mutt doesn't start editor when .signature is missing

    From Jens Kubieziel@1:229/2 to All on Sat Aug 21 01:10:08 2004
    From: [email protected]

    Package: mutt
    Version: 1.5.6-20040803+1
    Severity: normal

    I configured mutt to read .signature-file, but accidentally deleted that
    file. When I replied to a mail, mutt didn't start an editor and also
    didn't respond to any keys. If there is no .signature, mutt should print
    out an error mesage or silently ignore it.

    I just verified that this is what it does on my system.
    What did you broke?

    I really can't reproduce this, either with $signature being left to
    its default value, being set to a non-existing file or being set to a
    non-existing program (| appended).

    in all cases mutt just quietly starts the editor without a signature
    appended. you can check it works as I say doing this:

    $ echo 'set signature=/does-not-exist' >/tmp/muttrc
    $ mutt -nF /tmp/muttrc

    and sending then a mail. the editor will open with an empty body. if
    you can reproduce by means of some other settings, please explain.

    thanks,
