• Bug#267105: kicker: Clock applet doesn't show date when asked

    From Jerome L Quinn@1:229/2 to All on Sat Aug 21 01:00:10 2004
    From: [email protected]

    I don't actually have a wheel :-)

I wanted the applet to show the date below the time, which is what I
thought it could do. Instead, it
shows "New York", which is my time zone. Which I rarely care about when
    I'm not traveling.

This is when my mouse is nowhere near the applet.

BTW, this is the builtin clock applet we're talking about, right? This is
    my first time with KDE.

    Jerry

This is a fresh install of sarge/testing. When I try to configure the
clock applet in the panel to show the date in the default digital
display, it shows me the time zone region "New York", but not the date.

    hi,

the clock applet can display times for different timezones. put the
mouse over the applet and move the wheel of your mouse.

if this behavior annoys you, i.e., you don't want the wheel to have
any effect in the clock applet, configure the Timezones tab to have
    no zone selected.

if I misunderstood your problem, please write back with more
    information.

    thanks,

In my experience, if I select "Local Timezone" from the Right click -> Show Timezone -> menu, it shows the date. If I select a specific timezone, it
shows the name of the timezone.

So, I recommend checking to see if you have Local Timezone selected and selecting it if not.

    ok.

yes, provided you check the "Date" checkbox in the Appearance tab of
    the Configure Clock menu.

    Instead, it
shows "New York", which is my time zone. Which I rarely care about when
    I'm not traveling.

ok, what does it say in: Clock Aplet -> right click -> Show Timezone.
in the popup menu that appears, Local Timezone should be selected for
the date to be displayed. otherwise, it will display the selected
    timezone.

This is when my mouse is nowhere near the applet.

fine. I thought it could be a mouse issue since many people wheel over
    the clock without noticing.

Hmm, sounds like I'm misconfigured then. Local timezone is giving me UTC instead of EDT. I kept
on selecting NY thinking it would actually change the timezone, not just
    the display.

When I do "Adjust date and time", I see that current timezone is UTC, but
    the dropdown shows new york
highlighted. The message above the dropdown says "To change the timezone, sleect your area from the
list below". I'm expecting that setting this will change my timezone for
real, not just alter the applet display,
especially since I had to type the root password to get here. So is there
a bug that the configure doesn't
update the system timezone corrrectly? Or am I still not understanding?

    Jerry

Just to follow up, if I bring up the "adjust time and date" dialog, change the timezone dropdown
to another value and back to new york, and click apply, the timezone now shows EDT as
I expect. However, after I hit OK, it goes back to UTC.

I've noticed that when you update (as root) the timezone using that
configure dialog (the "Adjust Date & Time..." one), the clock applet
does not immediatly update to the new timezone. you'll have to restart
    kde.

    maybe that's your problem?
