But no, gpm had started the daemon and overwritten /dev/mouse
with link pointing to /dev/gpmdata, which obviously caused havoc with
my X settings and turned my system into rather unusable state (as my
dualhead Radeon system has broken text consoles when X is running, see
    bug #253088).

We'll definitely rethink the thing about the /dev/mouse symlink. I
personally don't see the need to do this, so I'll try and find out why
    it was done.

As for starting the daemon automatically, that's pretty much how all
daemon packages in Debian work. I don't consider it a bug.

And obviously I deciced that I want to get rid of the whole gpm
package, but apparently the package is so broken that it doesn't even
    allow to be removed:

I'm cloning this bug report since it's actually two separate bugs. In
the future, if you have two different issues to report, we'd appreciate
getting two separate bug reports. That makes everything easier to deal
with. In particular, in this case, I've just fixed the latter bug, but
we haven't decided yet what to do about the former.

    Thanks,
    Peter
