  • Bug#266943: eflite turns in defunct state and no voice is sent to flite

    I configured emacspeak to use as speech server eflite.
    I used emacspeakconfig to reach this.

    When I start emacspeak, the emacspeak script seems to
    open normally. But no sound is sent to the speakers,
    except some beeps (change paragraph, backspace).

    What happens if you do the following:

    * Execute /usr/bin/eflite from the command line
    * Type in the following characters:

    ---snip---
    q { hello world }
    d
    ---snip---

    After you enter "d" followed by <return>, it should speak the text you
    included in { } for the previous "q" command. (use Ctrl-d to exit
    eflite again.)

    Does that produce speech?

    I can hear ogg vorbis files, using xmms. music from CD
    using cdcd. And voice generated by flite, using:

    flite "this is a test"

    I tried opened emacspeak in xterm (emacspeak -nw), in
    X window (emacspeak &) and in a virtual terminal
    (emacspeak).

    I'm using debian testing. I tried with
    emacspeak+eflite+flite from debian testing and from
    debian unstable.

    This is the only strange think that I observed:

    \_ emacs -q -l /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/emacspeak/lisp/emacspeak-setup.el

    \_ /usr/bin/eflite
    /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/emacspeak/servers

    I suspect that defunct process should be a problem.

    Did you try to type C-e C-s in Emacspeak after the startup is complete.
    This sequence restarts the speech synthesis backend. Maybe eflite crashes
    upon startup for some reason? Emacspeak is well know for not recovering from
    a crashed speech backend automatically sometimes.

    I tried to execute eflite as you said.

    when I start to type the "q { hello world } " line,
    this apears in top:

    when I type the "d" line that new one appears:

    when I type control-d, they all disappear. And no
    sound is listened.

    flite "teste teste" is already working

    I tried to type "C-e C-s" inside emacspeak. nothing
    happens. neither in the botton line of emacspeak.

    that is the contents of *Messages* buffer justs before
    start emacspeak:

    It seems that emacspeak is ok and flite is ok. Is this
    implies that the problem is really in eflite???
