Sorry, but I really can not remember that. For my part the bug can be
closed as you can not proceed without input from me, input I can not
give anymore :-/ However, my precious latex system works again after an apt-get --purge remove and apt-get intall cycle, so I am a happy man
anyhow! :-)

1) kpsewhich --format="web2c files" fmtutil.cnf
2) grep VARTEXMF /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf
3) grep VARTEXMF /etc/texmf/texmf.d/05TeXMF.cnf

1) should return "/var/lib/texmf/web2c/fmtutil.cnf"
2),3) should contain the following lines
VARTEXMF = /var/lib/texmf

Some general remarks:

I think the postinst should only *try* to do its work (running mktexlsr, update-*, fmtutil), and still exit 0 if it cannot. This will not make
the packages better, but it will drop the severity of bugs, because the installation can proceed without errors.

I doubt, however, that just adding a || true to all those lines makes
sense, and I fear we have to postpone this to after sarge.
