Hello,
I've found what I think is the problem, an erroneous flag in a
Makefile.am told mpich that bool is not supported. This has fixed the
symbol you identified.
Do you want to try this again? I will soon (within an hour) upload
1.6.0-3 which you can also get from
http://lyre.mit.edu/~powell/hypre/ .
I'm reporting this as fixed, unless you reopen.

Looking into the file libmpich++.a from mpich I cannot see the symbol
that hypre wants to use, I only see the symbol that the mpi standard requires. However, I haven't actually tried. I switched to lam before
I wanted to try hypre.
