• Bug#1104883: linux-image-6.12.25-amd64: Boot fail with Bios settings co

From ael@21:1/5 to All on Wed May 7 22:50:01 2025
    Package: src:linux
    Version: 6.12.25-1
    Severity: critical
    Justification: breaks the whole system
    X-Debbugs-Cc: [email protected]
    User: [email protected]
    Usertags: amd64

This is weird and may be related to #1104744 involving grub.

After installing linux-image-6.12.25-amd64 and noticing some messages
scroll past too fast to read mentioning UEFI (this system does not use
UEFI), the next attempt to boot produced irrelevant and confusing multiple messages from the BIOS without any options to reset the BIOS configuration
    and permit recovery.

Eventually I managed to get back to a BIOS menu using a devuan recovery usbstick. I was then able to access the BIOS again, and discovered that
some UEFI settings had been turned on which had rendered the system
unusable. Eventually I was able to turn off the UEFI trouble and restore
proper booting. Later, I discovered that the BIOS RTC had been reset
with the *month* reduced by 1; ie set to April, not May!!

But whatever, it is surely unacceptable to modify BIOS settings at all,
and certainly not without explicit permisiion. Obviously, my initial
thoughts were that the system had been hacked.

The BIOS had been set up to allow a secondary boot from a USBstick. If
that had not been enabled, I am not sure that I would have been able to recover. I suspect that I would have needed to physically remove the SSD
    and possibly more.

    A very stressful experience....

I checked the BIOS Battery and found that it was flat. The Bios did not
emit the promised beep on low battery:-)

But in any case, this is clearly not a bug in the kernel/grub, so
apologies for the noise. The delay in reporting was because the machine
was dismantled, and replacing the battery turned out to be less than straightforward because of silly welds.

I will try to close the bug if I remember how.
