• KATE crashes frequently when doing regex find/replace

From Gary Dale@21:1/5 to All on Sun Dec 29 22:50:01 2024
    I'm running Debian/Trixie on an AMD64 system. I use regex find/replace a
lot. Today KATE crashes almost every time I use one. Fortunately, it is
able to recover the modified file I was working on after the crash, so I
    am able to work.

You should install the package with the debug symbols (which you can
find on snapshots.debian.org) and create a bugreport on upstream.

I'm sorry I tried to help you. I will now block you to avoid doing the
    same mistake again.

Kind of defeats the purpose of this list.
To have to transmit detailed bug reports to an entirely separate list.

    Why have this list then?

    Why thank you.

Your Ego speaks volumes to us.

I was commenting on THIS list is for bug reporting.
And someone wants their EGO . SHADOW soothed by making all of us use
some secondary " upstream " email.
Just to make the same bug reports.

Which is why this list is MISUSED. AND BUG REPORTS are being
redirected to UPSTREAM just to soothe someones EGO / Shadow.

    That said.

I can break Debian down with my eyes closed.
From the Col. Linus Linux Kernal up.
KATE is factually not even a DEBIAN product.
So it shouldnt be referred to on these lists.

But it is part of KDE and I was referring specifically to the Debian
package (although I don't know if the problem affects other packagings
of KATE). I use KATE frequently for regex find and replace operations.

The whole bug reporting thing isn't exactly clear to me. I've had people
tell me I shouldn't use reportbug if it's not a Debian packaging issue,
for example. And reportbug just seems to have a lot of unresolved bugs
listed that seem more like a black hole than a method of getting an
issue resolved. I wonder if the reportbug system even gets looked at by developers or packagers because I rarely hear about bug reports until
    they are years old.

The Debian lists seem more responsive and handle more issues than just
    bugs.

KDE programs in general have a menu entry in the help menu to report bugs.

A bug opened to debian should be looked at and forwarded upstream by a debian developer, to avoid bothering the upstream developers with bad and not so useful bug reports.

But also, the people in the KDE team on debian are few and time is limited.

If you want to help you could close all bugs that are for KDE4 or similar, and try to reproduce the other ones and possibly close them as well.

Anyway the specific issue you reported, open a bugreport with the upstream project. Also install the debug symbols otherwise they won't be able to help, probably.
