    Hi Sedat.

Please no carbon copy to me.

    Sedat Dilek - 08.11.24, 08:13:28 MEZ:
new KDE Frameworks + Plasma + Gear (formerly Apps) announcements.

    Thanks for the information.

    Nice, nice, nice.

Did not check what is available in Debian repositories - will check
after my daily business-day at home.

Sedat, this is no competition. And it is also no race.

I decided to skip on KF 6.7.0 from experimental as according to what I
read on IRC #debian-qt-kde it was supposed to go to unstable. That is also
why I did not write anything about it here so far. I bet it will work just fine, but as KF 6.6 is in unstable already and works well enough for me I decided to just wait for the upload to unstable. I will then receive
things in the order the Qt/KDE team decides upon, whether it will be
Plasma 6.2 or KF 6.7 first. Of course you can install KF 6.7 from
experimental as usual on your own risk. As written, I bet it will work
just fine so it may likely only be a matter of personal preference on
whether to install it just yet or wait.

The main purpose of testing/unstable/experimental is to prepare the next stable. Additional it provides kind of a rolling distribution for more adventurous users. However that is not its main purpose. So as far as I understand it, the work of the Qt/KDE team is not primarily targeted at providing us testing/unstable/experimental users the latest and probably greatest within a minute after release. But it is mainly aimed at making
Plasma 6.whatever, KDE Gear 24.whatever and KF 6.whatever a good
experience in Debian 13 aka Trixie. That means sometimes a decision is
made to do things in a way that requires more effort than to "simply"
update the packaging, but is better suited and better supportable in the
long run. I bet many more users are using Plasma on stable than on unstable/testing or even partly experimental.

The Qt/KDE team can use help regarding triaging old and new bugs, help
with testing all aspects of Plasma and with testing KDE Gear and other KDE
apps and of course also with packaging.

    Best,

    +1 from a "stable" zealot here. =)

This goes as far as the Debian/KDE team, back in the days when KDE shipped Kmail2, decided to package the oldish Kmail1 with a newer KDE, which should have shipped with Kmail2. Debian/KDE did this because Kmail2 simply was not production ready then, and I would probably have abandoned Kmail2/Kontact during
that time (as many of my Ubuntu-using colleagues did), had Debian/KDE team decided to roll with Kmail2 at that point.
They did as they did, and so I am here today still using Kmail (now the stabilized Kmail2), and I'm grateful to the Debian/KDE team for the route they took.
Initially I also had that mindset of at least testing being a rolling release, which it is not, and neither are unstable or experimental.
As Martin explained (and I concur), it all mainly serves the purpose of preparing the next stable. Testing or unstable being usable at any given
point in time is merely a side-effect. :D

    Regards,

    Christian
