• Plasma 6.2 to experimental

    From Patrick Franz@21:1/5 to All on Thu Oct 10 17:30:02 2024
    Hi all,

    we've uploaded Plasma 6.2 to experimental.

    BUT PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL IT YET !!

    Several files have been moved to other packages and this can cause
    trouble during the installation if not taken care of properly.
    We are working on fixing these issues and hopefully, everything will be
    fine tomorrow.

    Please have a little patience until then.

    Thank you very much to all involved!

    BUT PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL IT YET !!

    Still installed by force installing the two file conflict affected packages. (This is no recommendation and I do not intend to describe here how to do
    it!)

    Seems to run just fine, thank you.

    It is all coming together, that is great to see. I appreciate that it has
    been a huge lot of work!

    Hi Diederik, hi.

    Diederik de Haas - 13.10.24, 11:58:41 MESZ:
    Today I made an attempt at upgrading plasma to 6.2 on my tablet, but
    have not succeeded so far. I'll be out for most of the day so further attempts will have to wait, but thought that some (partial) log of my attempts thus far could be beneficial.

    I upgraded a ThinkPad X1 Gen 1 tablet just yesterday. I first upgraded to latest unstable.

    Then I think I just did:

    apt install -t experimental plasma-desktop

    and I upgraded some applications as well:

    apt install -t experimental install dolphin kate konsole ark okular

    Something like that. Okular has option to change scrolling direction on
    swiping now I think. Was one of the reasons I updated it as well.

    Just worked nicely. I do not remember any issues whatsoever.

    If you are on another architecture than amd64, then maybe packages have
    not yet completely built? The X1 is Intel low voltage, thus X86_64.

    By the way, what tablet do you use? The X1 is a fine tablet, but stability
    on Linux is a bit flaky still.

    Best,

    I did that too.

    Then I think I just did:

    I tried it with the '-s' (simulate) param and it looks like that'll
    work! Later I'll look into why that could be the case.

    I have a Pine64 PineTab2 which runs on arm64, which generally is
    supported as good as on amd64, but it might be a factor.

    Thanks for the hint! (but gotta run now)

    Cheers,

    Hi,

    I first upgraded to latest unstable.

    Did that again, just to be sure.

    Then I think I just did:
    apt install -t experimental plasma-desktop

    The problem I had was due to my search/upgrade command.
    When I used the following command:
    ``aptitude safe-upgrade '~i~V5.27' -t experimental``

    that worked a LOT better! No more problems and the upgrade went fine :)

    In hindsight, this output should've been a clue ... :
    52 packages upgraded, 188 newly installed, 79 to remove and 150 not upgraded.

    and I upgraded some applications as well:

    apt install -t experimental install dolphin kate konsole ark okular

    ... that I missed to upgrade some things, which was fixed with:
    ``aptitude safe-upgrade '~i~V23.08' '~i~V24.05' -t experimental``

    And AFAIK, or at least on my systems, aptitude doesn't automatically
    install *new* recommends, which was fixed with:
    ``aptitude install clinfo+M kde-style-oxygen-qt6+M kgamma+M power-profiles-daemon python3-psutil+M wayland-utils``

    (I didn't install all the new recommends)

    I did closely compare the output of my first 'aptitude' command to see
    what got removed and what came (likely) in its place.
    The usual 'suspect' would be same name, but now ending with '6' instead
    of '5'. But the following list remained:

    khotkeys
    libgps30t64 -> qml6-module-qtpositioning ?
    libksgrd9
    libkwineffects14 -> libkwin6 ?
    libkwinglutils14 -> libkwin6 ?
    libpowerdevilui5
    libprocessui9
    libqt5multimedia5-plugins -> qml6-module-qtmultimedia ? libqt5multimediagsttools5 -> qml6-module-qtmultimedia ? libqt5multimediawidgets5 -> qml6-module-qtmultimedia ?
    libqt5quickshapes5
    plasma-workspace-wayland
    qml-module-org-kde-kcm
    qml-module-org-kde-kcmutils
    qml-module-org-kde-kio -> libkf6kiofilewidgets6 ? qml-module-org-kde-runnermodel
    qml-module-org-kde-solid
    qml-module-qtquick-shapes -> qml6-module-qtquick-effects ?

    It's very well possible that these are all fine, but figured I mention
    it so that the packagers could see if something could be missing.

    But with a quick test, everything seems to work fine ...

    By the way, what tablet do you use? The X1 is a fine tablet, but stability on Linux is a bit flaky still.

    ... as mentioned before, I have a Pine64 PineTab2 and there is 1 issue.
    In its DeviceTree file, there's this setting: ``rotation = <90>``
    which means that the panel needs to be rotated by 90 degrees to get the view/display as you'd want. While Plasma does that, it appears that SDDM
    does not (I also upgraded that to the version in Experimental).

    https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=494761 is the upstream bug for it,
    but I'm going to reassign it to sddm as the users in #pinetab apparently
    didn't describe the problem properly.
    Now that I've upgraded too, I can see the problem myself.

    Cheers and thanks for the hint which led me to the right commands!

    Maybe there isn't a bug. After adding/enabling this:

    ```sh
    $ cat /etc/sddm.conf.d/wayland.conf
    # This is the config file as Danct12 uses for their PT2 image
    # https://github.com/dreemurrs-embedded/Pine64-Arch/commit/7b44045d0ce9ebb1a28088a120d2184e966af6ba
    [General]
    DisplayServer=wayland #GreeterEnvironment=QT_WAYLAND_SHELL_INTEGRATION=layer-shell
    InputMethod=
    [Wayland]
    CompositorCommand=kwin_wayland --no-global-shortcuts --no-lockscreen --inputmethod maliit-keyboard
    ```

    SDDM was rotated correctly \o/
