Migrated, together with user-setup 1.105, and tested through a local
netinst build, I've just confirmed I can get a much fancier name than
usual:

May 15 03:22:04 user-setup: chfn: name with non-ASCII characters: 'Çÿrîl Brûléböïs'

I apologize for goofing this up. Sadly it was only noticed when it had
already crippled the installer.

Thanks to everyone, especially Cyril, Pascal, Salvatore, Chris and
everybody whom I forgot to mention, helping to clean this up in a
cooperative and productive manner. I was at Debconf Hamburg during the
process and it was a very nice experince to be able to just walk over to
other stakeholders and/or knowdlegeable people: "Can I talk to you for a
minute about adduser?" - It would have taken days longer without the conference.
