I've just pulled in a ceratopsian-theme splash screen - let me know what you think?

I remember we had some sort of issue with Debian 11 splash screen, where the "Debian 11" writing was at the bottom, and that may overlap with the kernel commandline, if you edit it manually, leading to bad visiblity.
This came to my mind, since the Debian 13 + swirl is also at the bottom.
But I guess you are aware of this?

Otherwise - looks good to me!

I have a few other topics to chase but that kind of things is usually my
main worry when a new theme comes up. Depending on patterns/colors that
might affect GRUB in a different way.

My initial plan was to give it a try and if that happens, either drop
Debian and/or 13 entirely to get the release out, or move them around.

(I find it slightly better not to have a minor bug than to have an
    errata entry about it.)

Worst case, we ship as is, and we fix it up for RC 2.

I'd be entirely fine if someone wanted to adjust things a little while
I'm chasing down other things. Otherwise, fear my Inkscape skillz (or
    lack thereof, really)!

Maybe I'm getting old and forgetful - I don't remember an issue with
the kernel command line in Bullseye?

Happy to tweak the artwork here some more if people want, of course -
that's why I was asking for feedback. :-)

I don't recall (and won't chase) the specifics, but ISTR readability
problems with e.g. bright white text overlapping on a bright(ish) white
Debian logo at the bottom, when you edit the Linux kernel cmdline.

At a step where you might be stuck with an unfamiliar keyboard layout,
that can be a little annoying.

I have one more topic to look into (review and likely extend) before
starting to build images locally, and testing them. I think I'll take
the splash screen(s) as is, and if any adjustments are needed, they can
    wait until RC 2.

pardon me for stealing this thread, but which packages do I need
installed to have the graphical grub bootloader splash screen? My
notebook boots from a USB stick that is unisoned from /boot, so the not-appearance might also be a result of my strange boot setup.

    Any hints will be appreciated.

    Greetings

No packages are needed AFAIK. When /boot/grub.cfg is generated by grub-mkconfig/update-grub, /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme is invoked and
uses the first existing picture among:
    1. $GRUB_BACKGROUND defined in /etc/default/grub
    2. JPEG|PNG|TGA files found in /boot/grub
    3. $WALLPAPER defined in /usr/share/desktop-base/grub_background.sh
    4. /usr/share/images/desktop-base/desktop-grub.png
    5. default theme

If the picture file is not readable by GRUB (unsupported filesystem or
block layer) or is not in the same filesystem as /boot/grub, then the
    picture is cached as /boot/grub/.background_cache.<type>.

Why is that so ? Can you tell more about your setup ?

    Hi,

    Steve McIntyre <[email protected]> (2025-05-11):
I've just pulled in a ceratopsian-theme splash screen - let me know
    what you think?

I think: thank you! (in public this time)

I'm seeing at least the feared readability issue when editing the kernel command line in BIOS mode. It's a little annoying as the logo is right
where one might want to start tweaking things. I think I'll errata it
out, because I'm also seeing other small glitches (that I didn't try to
check or replicate with bookworm). [bios-0.png]

Editing the default entry in UEFI mode seems much better (albeit with a repeated, shifted, cropped background used in the frame) [efi-0.png]

Diving into the advanced options, all submenus seems to have a ugly cyan
on blue frame (e.g. Graphical expert install). Possibly a trivial fix? [efi-1.png]

I'm only including bios-0.png to improve my chances of having this mail
reach the list, others can be found at:
    https://people.debian.org/~kibi/ceratopsian/

It'd be great if someone could check dark mode at some point, I'm not
opening this can of worms myself.

    Cheers,

Thanks Holger, that's exactly what I needed to see. :-)

I'll take another look at the new splash screen once we've pushed RC1

That was quite helpful. By sprinklinkg a few -x into those scripts I
