  • cleanup of debian installer news

    Hi installer team,

    I'm part of Debian's web team and I like to remove old outdated content.

    The reason is that we have too may web pages (more that 63.000 wml
    files) and our search engine is not able to present search results
    order by date.

    Currently I'm search for very old contents and I stumbled upon
    https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/News/
    which lists all news from the past back to 2003.

    IMO News become irrelevant very fast, so keeping them on our web pages
    does not make sense. What do you think about removing all past years
    and only listing the news that are relevant to the current stable and
    testing release. So we would not list debian installer news by year,
    but just provide a list link to the news relevant for bookworm for e.g.

    What is your oppinion about this cleanup?

    BTW, I'm on my way to DebConf. Will anyone from the installer team
    also come to Kochi?

    I understand where you're coming from and I applaud your effords for the
    very most part, however I also think we should not just remove our history
    from our very website.

    What is your oppinion about this cleanup?

    I think it makes sense to move the content *away*, so that we keep history visible, reduce load from our main search engine and not mislead translators
    to translate such old stuff by accident.

    That looks the search engine needs fixing then.

    I'm not convinced at all; it's frequent to go back and look when this or
    that change was introduced, and actively removing useful information due
    to technical limitations in a search engine doesn't seem convincing at
    all.

    installer. I've never looked backed at all and news or changes from
    that long ago does not seem worth keeping.
    And we will still have these news/announcements on the
    debian-devel-announce mailing list.

    That's unfortunately a frequent situation. That still doesn't justify
    removing useful information.

    I disagree. That part is specifically under the *devel/* namespace.

    that long ago does not seem worth keeping.

    Your absence of need doesn't cancel our actual need. Which by the way
    might be for our sake or for users'…

    And we will still have these news/announcements on the
    debian-devel-announce mailing list.

    That's much more cumbersome to wade through than looking into a central
    place.
