I have finally worked out what has been annoying me for a couple of
years - when working from home using VPN and secure remote and using
putty to connect to linux servers. ALT-SHIFT changes the keyboard
layout (hash and backslash; double quote and at sign).
This is fairly easy to key by mistake in emacs.
Hopefully this message will be found on Google by other users who have
the same problem.
