    which I no longer own. There's some data on there I'd like to get and
    put on Computer "B" which is the one I now use.

    Can this be done?

    you don't. time machine backups are finder readable so you can connect
    the drive and find the relevant files, or tell time machine about the
    drive and use its ui.

    You don't need Migration Assistant just to recover a few files. You can
    mount the volume on the Mac, then navigate to the folder within the
    "latest" backup to copy whatever you need. It should be pretty straight-forward.

    You don´t. Just plug it in and copy the files you need via the finder.
