• iOS 16.0 was a beta test

From Thomas E.@21:1/5 to All on Tue Oct 11 14:10:59 2022
It was released to the public as 16.0. Ha. At least 2 issues that any prior beta should have been uncovered! Roller coasters and vigorous exercise set off the new emergency notifications! And the one I found, CarPlay phone calls could not be heard by
those you called. That was just fixed in the 16.0.3 release. Did anyone even try CarPlay calls using 16.0???? My first CarPlay call after installing 16.0.3 yesterday was just fine. Now I'm wondering if a high G airplane maneuver will be accompanied by
emergency vehicles meeting me at the airport!

X.0 versions of any software is going to have issues.

I have not bothered with iOS 16 yet, and am constantly amused by EVERYONE
who rush to install the X.0 version of iOS (or MacOS, or Windows or
whatever) and then complain about issues. Did you learn nothing from iOS
    13? Windows 8? OS/2 2.0? Windows ME?

There is no rush, folks. Wait at least until X.1.2 or so. Unless, of course, you enjoy complaining about being an unpaid beta tester. 🙄

I completely skipped iOS 13. There is no penalty for doing so. You are
not forced to install anything. In fact, unless you check for updates
you won’t even know that any updates are available.

The way things look now, I may skip 16. iOS 16 is already a joke, and
the first official iPadOS is going to be 16.1. That is exactly how iOS 13 started.

Got a call in the car while on ios 16.0. Could not hear other end and
had to keep turning up the volume - but I was able to continue the call.

Don't bother yourself. I'm not flying an airliner.

"The determination of an interfering effect caused by a particular device on the navigation and
communication system of the aircraft on which it is to be used or operated must, in case of an aircraft
operated by the holder of an air carrier certificate or other operating certificate, be made by that
operator (i.e., certificate holder). In all other cases, a determination must be made by the operator
    and/or by the pilot-in-command (PIC)."

In 20 years of flying with cell phones in private aircraft I have never seen an interference issue.

Agreed, those who go with the .0 iOS release are really public beta testers. I sort of enjoy it, and love to gripe at Apple. Good sport!

Having a phone on is not a problem. I was assuming the crash alerts work just fine in airplane mode. Do they? Since it's a sat-phone subsystem I assume so.

I don't know any pilots who actually go to the extreme of turning phones completely off. You would not want to have to boot one up if you need it.

Today I did a +2 and 0 g demo. Nothing happened other than some smiles from the passenger. Either it was not enough to set it off or airplane mode turns off the alerts.

So you admit that you weren't previously putting the phone into airplane >> mode.

You admit you broke the rules.

No, if airplane mode turns off the alert it would not have gone off. CAP has airplane mode on the pre-start brief.
But your statements clearly indicate you fly with airplane mode off...

The subject of the thread is accidental triggering of an emergency call via iPhone's new satellite-based comms channel. Having nothing of substance to contribute you launch an attack on the thread originator. Despicable. And you do this all the time.

It does not matter if my phone is off, in airplane mode, or not. Your sociopathic pattern has always been to launch a diversionary personal attack when faced with a challenging question.

A little thinking about the Apple presentation on this new capability implies that no cell phone reception is necessary. After all, if your cell connection was working you could just call 911. So, if in airplane mode you could be connected via satellite.
Otherwise, what's the point? If your phone is powered down or has a dead battery then you are out of luck.

You mean you break FAA regulations regarding the use

    I'm shocked.

Don't bother yourself. I'm not flying an airliner.

"The determination of an interfering effect caused by a
particular device on the navigation and communication
system of the aircraft on which it is to be used or
operated must, in case of an aircraft operated by the
holder of an air carrier certificate or other operating
certificate, be made by that operator (i.e., certificate
holder). In all other cases, a determination must be made
by the operator and/or by the pilot-in-command (PIC)."
    You ignored this:

'The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) currently
prohibits the use of cell phones while airborne.'

I'm not seeing where that prohibition is limited to
    airline passengers.

In 20 years of flying with cell phones in private
aircraft I have never seen an interference issue.
    Right.

As always, you're for following the rules...

...unless you deem it appropriate to break them.

Having a phone on is not a problem. I was assuming the crash
alerts work just fine in airplane mode. Do they? Since it's a
    sat-phone subsystem I assume so.
    The FCC disagrees.

You break the rules when it suits you, you little shit.

I don't know any pilots who actually go to the extreme of
turning phones completely off. You would not want to have to
boot one up if you need it.

Today I did a +2 and 0 g demo. Nothing happened other than
some smiles from the passenger. Either it was not enough to
set it off or airplane mode turns off the alerts.
So you admit that you weren't previously putting the phone into

Your bar for "despicable" is set very low.

I observed you break the rules when it suits you.

Regardless, it was clear from your comments that your phone is NOT
normally in airplane mode when you fly a private plane.
