At an All-Electric Fun Fly event at a local RC field I had the chance to use my new DJI Mini SE connected to my brand new iPhone 14 Pro to find two crashed models. The first had gone down a few days before the event and the second an hour or so later
during the event.
Lucky for both aircraft owners the adjacent field was planted in soybeans this year, not corn. Lost aircraft in corn are much more difficult to find with a drone.
We established a sight line toward the crash locations, I set up on that line at the field's edge, and sent a volunteer out into the soybeans along the line. The drone took off and went to about 50-75 feet AGL and tracked toward the distant object along
the line.
The first search took only about 2 minutes to find the aircraft. The second took about 12 minutes. A witness thought the second one crashed a lot farther than it turned out to be the case. I flew out to the point where he thought it crashed, wandered
about a bit out there, then came back on the sight line and found it only about 100 feet into the soybeans. All the wandering around farther out footage was clipped from the 12 minute video.
The iPhone 14 Pro screen was super bright and a big help in spotting both finds in bright sunlight.
